Asset risk intelligence

A mining company connected closure sites to early external signals

A global mining company needed to detect regulatory and community signals around closure sites across several regions and languages. Genie linked each relevant signal to the site, issue and stakeholders around it, then carried the context into monthly regulatory reviews.

A remote signal could matter to a specific site.

The closure and regulatory teams at a global mining company needed to follow policy change and stakeholder discussion across several regions and languages. A local issue could emerge far from headquarters and still matter because of its proximity to a former or closing asset.

General news alerts produced noise and did not reliably connect a signal with the relevant site. Manual monitoring also made it difficult to compare local concerns with regulatory developments elsewhere.

Sites became anchors for regulatory and stakeholder data.

TSC configured Genie so closure sites could be monitored as individual records. External signals were linked to the relevant asset, issue and stakeholder. The monitored themes included mining waste, biodiversity, acid mine drainage, community concerns and regulatory change.

Coverage at national, state and local level gave the team a way to follow both formal policy and the earlier discussion around it. Stakeholder data showed which regulators, communities and organisations were connected to the issue.

The system picked up a local media report about tap-water contamination. Because the location sat near a former company asset, it reached leadership as a high-priority signal, early enough to act before the issue grew.

The alert concerned the site's proximity to the report. It gave the team a reason to investigate, but did not attribute the contamination to the company.

Monthly review carried the context forward.

TSC used the linked record to produce a monthly regulatory review combining relevant media, policy movement and stakeholder activity. The recurring format helped decision-makers focus on emerging issues without rebuilding the context from generic alerts.

Each closure site remained connected to regulatory developments, community signals and stakeholder context. That site-linked intelligence could carry forward into the next review or escalation.

Factsheet

  • Closure sites were monitored as individual intelligence records.

  • A local media report on water quality near a former asset was escalated for follow-up.

The proximity triggered investigation. The intelligence did not attribute the issue to the company.

  • A monthly review combined relevant media, policy movement and stakeholder activity.
